Children's Sermon: Mary Sings a Song to God

Bible Verse: Luke 1:46-55

In the picture above we see Mary, the human girl who gave birth to Jesus, who is the Son of God. She was a human, but she was God's mother! How can this be?

Mary, Mother of God

Mary was an ordinary teenage girl. She was engaged to marry a local carpenter named Joseph. One day, an angel came to her and told her that God had put a baby inside her. She was going to be the Mother of God!

Now, this might seem exciting, but it was actually kind of scary. Mary wasn't married to Joseph yet. People might not believe her when she told them God was the father of her baby. In, fact, when Joseph found out, he wanted to break up with her at first, and her parents sent her to live with her cousin Elizabeth. Some people were likely to be very angry when they heard this news.

Mary Trusted God

Mary might have been scared, but she trusted God. The Holy Spirit inspired her to sing a song praising God. He told her that her son would save everybody from their sins. They would be closer to God because Jesus was born.

Jesus was just an ordinary girl, but of all people in the world, she had the most important job to do. She had to bring Jesus into the world and take care of Him when He was small.

She also knew that God chose His servants from people who didn't brag about themselves or tell other people how important they were. That's why he chose her, and not the daughter of somebody famous or rich.

She was so happy to be chosen, she just had to sing about it! Here is what she said:

Praise God!

I am so happy that God has come to save me!

He knows I am not very important. But now, everybody who hears this story will say I have God's blessing on me!

God did great things for me! He is holy!

He is strong, and he shows proud men that they are not really in charge. God is in charge.

He chooses poor people over powerful people.

He gives many good things to poor people, but he sends rich people away with nothing.

He is going to keep his promises to Abraham! He will bring Israel a new king!

Even though God gave Mary a hard assignment, she was grateful to God for choosing her. We should all try to be obedient like Mary when God tells us to do things that are hard.

Many famous composers have turned Mary's song of praise into beautiful musical pieces that we enjoy to this day.
